Google filed a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by anti-corporate diversity activist Ruby Starbuck, who claimed that Google’s AI falsely linked her to sexual assault allegations and a white nationalist.
Starbucks is seeking $15 million in damages from Google. But the company said in its filing that their claims simply represent their “misuse of developer tools to create deception.” Starbuck does not identify what the output was in front of, according to Google, or any actual people who were misled by the alleged claims. Starbuck did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Google, of course, could choose a similar path for Meta to resolve claims. But at least for now, it’s choosing to fight them in court.
