Uttar Pradesh Announces Emergency Medicine Departments in All State Medical Colleges, ET HealthWorld

Lucknow: Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Saturday announced that every state medical college in Uttar Pradesh will soon have a dedicated emergency medicine department.

“Emergency medicine departments will strengthen patient care. While all doctors are trained to treat medical emergencies, having a dedicated emergency medicine department increases their efficiency. This will reduce the patient load on institutions like KGMU,” he said.

Pathak made this statement during the inauguration of the two-day First National Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Conference (NEMICON 2024) at KGMU.

Pathak emphasised the need for better coordination among various departments of KGMU to ensure smooth patient transfers, especially given the spread-out nature of its facilities.

Around 700 doctors from India and abroad attended the event and discussed innovations in emergency medicine and intensive care. KGMU VC Prof Sonia Nityanand praised the emergency medicine department for its contributions to trauma care and thanked the Deputy CM for his support.

Head of the department of emergency medicine Prof Haider Abbas shared critical advice on snake bite treatment, urging people not to make incisions on the wound, as it worsens the condition. He said that high number of snake bite fatalities was due to delayed or incorrect treatment.

Prof Ahsan Siddiqui from the department of anaesthesia said timely treatment is vital in poisoning cases, as around 50,000 deaths occur annually in India due to poisoning.

The conference saw significant contributions from Society for Emergency Medicine India officials and KGMU residents, which helped make the event a success, said Prof Ahsan.
