Patient Claims Slapping Incident, Hospital Launches Investigation, ET HealthWorld

Raipur: After a patient alleged that he was slapped by a doctor in the plastic surgery department, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur administration has reportedly launched an investigation into the matter.

The spokesperson of AIIMS has however denied the allegations, calling them “absolutely false.”

The controversy arose from a video circulating on social media at AIIMS Raipur, where a patient accused a doctor of slapping him.

According to the patient, a resident of Bilaspur, he underwent surgery on the right side of his chest on Oct 16. However, upon regaining consciousness around 9:30 PM, he experienced a headache on the left side. The patient’s wife noticed swelling on his head, as if he was hit. When they inquired with the doctor on duty, they were directed to the doctor who performed the surgery.

The patient waited until the doctor arrived around 11 PM and asked about the headache. The doctor allegedly responded angrily, saying, “What do you mean by that? Are you trying to say we hit you inside the operating theatre?” The patient claims the doctor then slapped him twice and pushed his wife. The hospital staff reportedly supported the doctor and even called police, accusing the patient of trying to flee.

In response to the viral video, the AIIMS administration has ordered an inquiry, with the medical superintendent (MS) leading the investigation, sources in AIIMS said. The hospital retrieved CCTV footage and is currently investigating.

However, Dr Mrityunjay Rathore, spokesperson of AIIMS Raipur, denied the patient’s allegations, calling them “absolutely false.”

He stated that the patient was repeatedly trying to get up from the bed despite being prevented by the staff for his own health. Dr Rathore also mentioned that the patient used slang when the staff tried to prevent him and that some attendants present threatened the doctor. He clarified that no doctor or staff member slapped the patient.

Regarding the patient’s headache, Dr Rathore acknowledged that it may happen sometimes but emphasised that the patient and his attendants should have behaved properly with the hospital staff. When asked about the inquiry, Dr Rathore maintained that all the allegations are false.
