Compatibility with your smart home is one of the first things you need to consider when buying new appliances. You want something that fits your smart home ecosystem. Buying something that won’t work with your home doesn’t make much sense and will only set you back. You will only make a mistake once if you don’t pay attention to the logo on the box.
Each smart home device lists which ecosystems it works with. It usually highlights the most well-known ones, such as Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit. Sometimes, devices will work with all of them, so you don’t have to worry about which one you have. Other times, it will work with just one. A few specific logo searches can show you how wide the compatibility really is.
Check the box at the bottom right.
This is where you will find most of the logos.
When buying a smart home device, whether it’s a smart speaker, some smart blinds, or just a new smart plug, you should really check the box. Not only will the box give you the details of what the device can do, as well as some marketing information to make the product look really good, it will also give you important information on specs as well as how to connect the device.
Many devices these days will force you to scan a QR code to get the instruction manual, where you’ll find all the information you need on how to use it. But the box will also give you logos for different ecosystems, and the more there are, the more you’ll be able to use them with what you have.
The more options you have, the more ways you can control your device. Let’s say you have an Amazon Echo Show speaker and want to pair it with your Nest Thermostat. You can because Nest Thermostats work with Amazon Alexa. But they also work with Google Home or Apple HomeKit. This gives you more options when you are building your smart home. What you may want to do is build a home with appliances that are connected to each other, regardless of their manufacturer.
Matter and thread can go a long way.
Look for these specific logos.
Substance and thread technologies help your devices communicate with each other. Thread creates a network to connect devices that run without Wi-Fi. It’s low-power and mesh, so devices will communicate with each other, even if Wi-Fi isn’t currently working in your home.
To use Thread, you need a Thread border router, which is a device that acts as a hub for other devices. This is not necessarily a designated hub, as there are many devices that fall into this category. If you’re looking for one, you need to look for the “built-on thread” logo on a box.
A substance is a standard used to connect devices to each other. Substance eliminates the need for smart home owners to use a specific brand of device. If a device is material compatible, it can work in any ecosystem with other material compatible devices.
Substance also works on ThreadBorder routers, allowing you to combine the two technologies to build your smart home that allows more devices to communicate with less power and better. The substance logo looks almost like a star and is easily visible on the packaging.
When you have a meter device, having this box is very important. This is because there is a QR code on the device that you need to scan to set it up. Without this code, it is difficult to configure quickly.
Other Technologies You Can Use
The material and thread may be new, but others are still in use.
Options like Zigbee and Z-Wave are other protocols your home can use. Zigbee and Z-Wave are still the most used in homes and they work like threads by creating your own mesh network to connect your devices.
These help your devices extend the coverage of your smart home gadgets. They don’t require the use of a central router, giving you flexibility in your choice of devices.
Z-Wave and Zigbee can be more expensive than other options because they require a dedicated hub or a bridge to help connect your devices. This is similar to a thread border router, but a thread border router does not have to be just a bridge or a hub.
Zigbee is slightly more brand-specific than other options and Z-Wave options must have Z-Wave Alliance certification. These and the threads are similar enough that you can use them in your home with some of your older and more venerable appliances. The Zigbee logo spells out the word Zigbee with a sharp red design. The Z-Wave logo looks like it’s the word that the broadcast signal is coming out of.
Check the box for smart home device compatibility.
When setting up a smart home, it’s important to get devices that are compatible with each other. You want your devices to talk to each other if you can, as this helps keep your home online, even when the power is out. Pay attention to the box logo so you can see how flexible what you’re buying is.
