Like other streaming services, Roku has plenty of ways to adjust settings and operate hidden menus via button combinations. You may want to learn how to operate your device, troubleshoot problems, or customize your home screen. Fortunately, they’re really easy to learn and use, but be sure to keep combinations close at hand while you work.

Clear your cache with the home button.

As you use your Roku daily, it stores temporary data like thumbnails and login credentials to load your favorite channels faster. This is great in the short term, but this temporary memory eventually fills up. This leads to slow application launch, endless buffering, and menu navigation that stops completely.

I wish I had known years ago that you could clear your cache with your remote. It doesn’t require complicated preferences, and you won’t lose your downloaded applications or account passwords.

To do this, grab your remote and make sure you are on the main dashboard screen with the Home option highlighted on the left. Next, you need to press home button five times immediately. Immediately after that, press above Directional arrow once. Press to execute it. Rewind Press the button twice, and press to finish the setting. Fast forward button twice.

Once you type in that particular combination, your television screen will freeze for a moment. This is a good thing and proves that the command worked. The device will then automatically reboot itself, which usually takes fifteen to thirty seconds. Wait for the logo to appear and the home screen to reload.

Your gesture is very important.

If you’re dealing with a slow stream and want to check your wireless connection, Roku has a hidden screen that shows you detailed diagnostic information without having to click through multiple menus. To open the Wireless Secret screen, hold your remote and press the Home button five times, then quickly press up, down, up, down, up. This command pulls up a diagnostic panel that displays your Wi-Fi signal strength, antenna details, and network error rate.

Instead of relying on the typical network status indicator, you can see your actual connection numbers. It’s a good idea to know the exact strength of your signal when you’re trying to diagnose playback issues or map your Wi-Fi. Because digital signals work on an all-or-nothing basis, a weak connection usually freezes the video completely, rather than blurring it.

You can see color-coded bars that show your signal strength. If these indicators turn yellow or red, you will immediately know that the device is struggling to maintain a connection. This way, you can know if you need to restart your router or move it closer to your device.

Press the Home button on your remote and scroll down to the Settings menu. From there, you select Accessibility and then click Caption Mode. You have to do this very quickly while on the main dashboard to show the developer screen. From here, the system will bypass all the regular menus and jump right to the development application installer page. From this page, you can enable the installer, set the web server password, and find the IP address or username for your device.

It lets you load third-party application packages directly from a web browser on a computer connected to the same network. This shortcut is a great way to save time because the Developer Mode options are nowhere to be seen in the standard Roku menu.

Moving channels with the directional pad

When you add a new streaming channel to your Roku device, the system automatically drops it right below your application grid. Since we all download a large list of services like Netflix or Hulu over time, this default layout leads to a cluttered home screen.

Every time you turn on your television, you have to keep pressing the down button because you have to scroll through pages of tiles just to find the one application you really want to watch. Instead, go to the app you want to move and press the star or star button on your remote to open a menu of quick options.

You will see an option called Move channel or Move app. Select this option, and you can use the directional pad arrows to slide the tile left, right, up, or down to a new location. When you find the perfect spot for it, simply press the OK button in the center of your directional pad to lock the tile in place.
