Blue Origin scrubs second New Glenn launch, will try again November 12

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin postponed the second launch of its new Glenn mega rocket for Sunday afternoon due to weather concerns, some minor problems with launch pad equipment, and at least one cruise ship that strayed close to the flight path.

Company said At the end of Sunday it would be another go to begin the second mission to New Glen on Wednesday, November 12. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced restrictions on space launches late last week due to the government shutdown, and Blue Origin said in a post on X Sunday that it had worked with the FAA to make another attempt. The launch window opens at 2:50 p.m. ET and lasts until 4:17 p.m. ET.

This mission is an important one for Blue Origin for a number of reasons.

For one, the company is still proving the rocket’s full reusability. The New Glen successfully reached orbit during its first launch in January, but the booster exploded before it could land on the drone ship in the ocean. Blue Origin hopes to land the boosters for the first time during this second flight.

It is also the first commercial mission for New Glen. The rocket will carry NASA’s Escapade spacecraft into space, where it will embark on a mission to Mars. New Glenn is also carrying a tech demonstrator for the mission, which is part of another NASA project. Proving New Glenn can safely deliver payloads into space — and thanks in large part to its cost-effective rocket reusability — is crucial if Blue Origin wants to compete against Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Blue Origin originally planned to attempt a second launch earlier this year, but it has been delayed several times. Sunday’s launch window in Cape Canaveral, Florida initially opened at 2:45 p.m. ET, and the company had about a 90-minute window. Due to weather problems and launch pad equipment problems, this time slips a few times.

With the clock ticking again just minutes before the launch attempt, a cruise ship entered the path of the flight, according to the broadcast. Although the plane was expected to clear just before the 4:15 p.m. launch window, the weather was still a concern, causing the company to abort the attempt.
