A Safe Solution for Severe Obesity in Lucknow, ET HealthWorld

Lucknow: With one in four people in Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, now classified as overweight, experts have expressed concern about increasing obesity rates. Contributing factors include unhealthy sleep patterns, consumption of junk food, and a sedentary lifestyle.

At a recent event held at Health City Vistaar Hospital, specialists emphasised that weight management through diet and exercise should be the first step in addressing obesity. However, for individuals with severe obesity, defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 32 or higher, bariatric surgery is recommended as an effective solution.

During the event, experts highlighted the recent success of three bariatric surgeries performed at the hospital. These procedures were led by a team of specialists, including Dr Sanjay Patolia, a bariatric surgeon from Ahmedabad, and Dr KB Jain, a senior gastro surgeon and chief consultant at Health City Vistaar. The surgeries, performed on patients weighing over 150kg, utilised the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass technique, considered one of the most effective weight loss surgeries.

Dr Jain explained that bariatric surgery helps not only with weight loss but also in reducing the risk of related health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. He noted, “Patients with severe obesity face increased risks of these conditions. Bariatric surgery plays a key role in improving overall health.” Dr Jain said the hospital has expert team and modern facilities to provide high-quality care to patients.

Dr Patolia emphasised the safety of the procedure when performed by skilled professionals. “Bariatric surgery, particularly the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is a safe procedure when conducted by a specialised team. It offers rapid and sustained weight loss, which can lead to significant improvements in conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and fatty liver.”

Most patients stay in the hospital for 2-3 days and can resume normal activities within a few weeks. “Our advanced techniques help patients recover quickly, reducing hospital stays and minimising surgical risks,” added Dr Patolia.

The procedure is covered by most medical insurance providers, making it accessible to a broader population. Corporations and govt bodies are also recognising the importance of addressing obesity and have begun sponsoring bariatric surgeries.

Dr Sandeep Kapoor, managing director of Health City Vistaar, highlighted the convenience of accessing such specialised surgeries in Lucknow. “Offering these advanced treatments locally helps residents avoid the cost and hassle of travelling to larger cities for care,” he said.
